Sunlit Timber

We transformed this Takoma Park kitchen by reconfiguring the entire layout around an existing rear addition converting it into a fully conditioned breakfast room. The rebuilt doorway, framed in warm wood trim, creates a clear sightline from the kitchen into the new breakfast room beyond. The new layout has a vibrant material palette, where high-gloss emerald and forest green zellige tiles create a rhythmic backsplash against light grey cabinetry and classic checkered flooring.By building a new run of lower cabinets with a butcher block counter and open wood cubbies along the kitchen's window wall, we freed up the opposite wall to consolidate the fridge, sink, and oven in one run, keeping the galley layout open and light. Custom cabinetry built into the converted rear addition handled pantry storage, allowing the kitchen itself to stay clear. This continuous use of natural timber allows light from the garden to pour into the center of the kitchen, highlighting the transition from the original home into the new interior space.
